In forty-five months, the worldwide average for processing a SETI@home work unit has gone from 30.5 CPU-hours on 5-Jul-1999 to 10.4 CPU-hours on 29-Mar-2003, due to faster machines. The introduction of version 3, which does more science processing to take advantage of the
excess
capacity, caused a turnaround in the trend as participants gradually started running it.
